This building once housed a printing and stationery shop owned by John Davison, who after working for the Mr. Pike, went on to establish his own business in 1855. He moved to the premises in the picture around 1870.
Bookbinding requires skill in understanding the quality of paper and types of glue best used for the process of joining printed sheets into finished products, such as pamphlets or books. It would have involved cutting, folding, gluing, stitching, and trimming, to produce the new handbook to Alnwick Castle priced at 6d.
Another occupant of this space was the Green Bamboo.
For many people in Alnwick in the 1960’s their first taste of Chinese food came from the Green Bamboo, run by Mr. Yip and his family. The 3-course lunchtime special cost five shillings.
