Anthony Salvin (1799-1881) was a renowned architect who specialised in the restoration of medieval buildings, which also influenced his own designs. He was employed by the Duke of Northumberland to carry out the 19th century refurbishment of the Castle and was also involved in the design a number of local buildings, including St Paul’s church and Forest Lodge in Alnwick. He was also responsible for alterations to St Michael’s church and Hindmarsh Hall in Alnmouth.
