Walkergate developed as a separate community, where fulling of woollen cloth was carried out. This was a critical step in woollen clothmaking which removed oils and dirt from the woven cloth while making it thicker. This process was originally done by treading by foot, hence ‘walking’, but this manual process was superseded by water-powered hammers which had to be near the river.
