Who was Roger?
There is an old headstone at Holy Trinity Church, Old Bewick, which commemorates Roger who died at Bewick Mill in 1720. The inscription is a bit difficult to read (see below) and we don’t know who Roger was. From the parish registers it seems that he was Roger Moody.
Does anyone know anything about Roger, or the Mill, or how he died? Was he a Miller?, did he work at the Mill?, was he a mill carter?, did he have an accident?, was he attacked? or did he just come to grief in the mill stream? The river at the Mill was notorious for drownings. Do the ovals on the front of the headstone on each side of the face represent ears of corn and milling?
