The earliest reference we have found to the Four Horse Shoes is an 1827 directory but the pub was said to date back to the 1790s. The building is C17 / early C18.
It survived a fire in 1907, when it was the only thatched building left in Alnwick. It continued to trade as a pub until 1927 when the licence was not renewed.
It’s now part of W H Smith.
