The Hardy family opened their first shop in 1872 in Paikes Street, mainly selling guns, though their range quickly expanded to include fishing equipment. They were so successful that by 1887 they had moved to a larger premises on Bondgate Without. In 1891 they launched the first Hardy reel, the Perfect, which established the company’s reputation.
